As this sort of ranges across the enclaves, governance, and cultural modules, I chose to put it all here:

Federation mechanism:

“By having it be locally motivated and governed, it allows people to make what they feel works best for themselves. I think that by using the enclave fractalization system to our advantage here, it would be possible to specifically design a "breakway" mechanism. When people no longer want to live in the existing enclave/community, they can simply go through a basic process similar to the creation of a new enclave to make an alternative. While this alt is distinct and approaches things its own way, its still connected to the overall meta-cultural ecosystem. This way, you can have people opt into whatever mechanisms they prefer while still being participants of the larger whole.”

To address this, a system should be created that allows for seamless integration between enclaves. When an enclave reaches operational capacity (1200 people), it is then allowed to integrate into the larger federation of enclaves. As each enclave represents a self sufficient unit, the surplus production (of ideas, goods, etc under the label of “resources”) can be concentrate or distributed across the federation network as needed.

Proximity of the enclave networks allows for the natural formation of a functional arcology system – namely, that each enclave is itself a village-neighborhood in form. As a consequence of this, the concentration of resources means that this federation arcology-like system is significantly more robust and agile in comparison to classical social structures.

When taking in account enclaves separated by distance, federating becomes digital in nature when available. However, the barriers to digital access are significant, as it requires either the presence of meshnets in sufficient quantity and quality or interaction with the existing infrastructure for digital transmission. It also limits the ability of enclaves to share tangible resources, instead relying in data and information exchange instead.

Adapting to this reality would require the shift of the framework to accommodate an information quality type – namely in the form of technologies that can be locally developed – to assist new enclaves and exclaves in setting themselves up.

The ideal form of these should be in the formation of at least 24-48 enclaves in a network in close proximity, creating a minimally viable cultural node within an arcology-like system.

In practice, the superstructure mirrors formations of other similar creations historically – namely in the Hakka Tulou and the Kasbah. In both cases, the center of the structure is communal, with habitation on the exterior wings and/or rings. This is an echo of the fractal arrangement that this framework as a whole is mimicking.

By leaning into this superstructure element, it allows for more adaptability locally with cultural norms. As the enclaves network together into larger, more sophisticated community buildings and resource utilization, they will adapt to their local circumstances. However, the greatest power of this system is in the network effect.

Fediverse/digital infrastructure is critical to the success of this. It allows for a centralized library of information that is contributed to by all members of the framework and beyond – an archive of operational knowledge. This is distinct from a classical library in the sense that the information stored here is specifically and implicitly designed to allow for an enclave to grow into these larger meta structural systems by means of local technologies.

Likewise, the hard limit of 1,200 people per enclave can be adapted into a range based on the needs of the local cultural population. Treating 1,200 people as a minimal functional baseline gives flexibility, and by using a ratio of the population instead of a hard number, you can let people govern the cladification process more locally. Meaning that if you say 16% of the population past X capacity means its time to split off, it gives flexibility which is one of the best components of this framework.

As already mentioned, 1,200 people as the minimal functional baseline is to be used as a guidestone. In practice, 1,400 (14%) people should be the approximate time when an enclave splits.

Guidestone:
1,200 people is the suggested minimum group size. 12%-16% beyond the ideal should be the point where a new enclave is formed.

Guilds:
“A norm, once built, is difficult to break down which reinforces the stability of the system. Likewise, by using 3's in the most basic unit of decision making, you're effectively baking consensus into the frameworks smallest possible decision units. From that smallest unit, you scale up, which will come more naturally to people as they're already accustomed to this mechanism. The Haudenosaunee consensus method was my own inspiration for my own systemic approach and could be a good one to look into for this as well. This is an area I've dived into pretty extensively, so just lmk if that is something I can help with.”

A suggested I made to modify the guild structure was to introduce a triumvirate mechanism in important roles. Beyond just the lottery mechanism – itself dependent upon a highly educated, motivated, and capable population – you also need a system that is fundamentally balanced in order to deal with the potential pitfalls of cliques and other similar power structures forming within the system.

By breaking important individual roles into a triumvirate, you’re able to help mitigate this somewhat by forcing all three to come to consensus on important decisions. As used as an example, the Resource Coordinate role is, in truth, 3 people serving in the position. Fractally, this reflects the larger meta-structure of the framework and on an even larger level represents an ideation towards the simplest most balanced shape in the form if a triangle.

You aim to integrate people at all levels conceptually, so that at no point is a person confused at the scales of things. Meaning that if I am a person who is part of an enclave and I wish to interact with the larger Federation, I intuitively understand that no matter where I go, there will always be 3 people serving that individual role. Regardless of population level, this should be the basic unit.

This creates trust within the overall system. If it is well designed at each level, it should be able to inhibit structural weak points seen in most other systems. However, it will still run the fundamental risk of all systems: it relies on the people to make it work. You can only account for that to a certain degree.

This should be planned for and accounted for to the best of our ability. Guilds, as they stand, should also be rebranded – “guild” carries with it a great deal of historical connotation. Selective use of terms is going to be important, so I would suggest something more service-oriented.

There are a multitude of cultural options. I personally favor:
“Gotong-royong is a conception of sociality ethos familiar to Indonesia. In Indonesian languages especially Javanese, gotong means 'carrying a burden using one's shoulder', while royong means 'together' or 'communally', thus the combined phrase gotong royong can be translated literally as 'joint bearing of burdens'. It translate to working together, helping each other or mutual assistance.[7] The village's public facilities, such as irrigation, streets, and houses of worship (mosque, church or pura) are usually constructed through gotong royong, where the funds and materials are collected mutually. Traditional communal events, such as the slametan ceremony, are also usually held in the gotong royong ethos of communal work spirit, which each member of society is expected to contribute to and participate in the endeavour harmoniously.”

There are other options though. All of these essentially boil down to descriptions of Community Work and Mutualistic organizations.

To look at the root of the Guild system, if we wish to keep it regardless of the potential context, we can see clearly how its origins influenced the mutualism movement:
“Originating from an adaptation of guild system at the 18th century (see guild and mount of piety) and widespread at the 19th century, today there are many mutualist associations worldwide integrated into modern society. Nowadays, mutualism is linked to financial firms, insurers, unions, entities to promote solidarity economics, trade associations and religious movements. The characteristic sign of mutual movement is its institutional neutrality about political, religious, racial and union affiliations of its members. Mutuals movement and cooperatives movement have many points in common, around the idea of professional mutual aid.[4]”

This means that if Guilds remain the preferred name, that their description can be refocused onto this root. By leaning onto that history, it gives credence and validity while also learning from the potential mistakes of the past. Ultimately, this will require further conversation and discussion on whether its the right choice for the framework.

One final barrier of note is that while audits do work, there needs to be a balance between too few audits and too many. Too many results in what I see in social work right now: a focus on paperwork over purpose. An audit should focus on holistic human outcomes, not “pragmatic” outcomes designed to benefit the system itself. This encourages adaptability and mitigates some of the more bureaucratic impulses.

Free Movement
Free movement is a critical part of the framework, as it allows for people to self-select for the enclave that they prefer to inhabit. They can look at the various options based on profiles on the fediverse or from whatever media systems exist within the federation to determine for themselves what practices they prefer.

When it comes to closed networked proximity enclaves, its much easier to manage FOM in comparison to diverse and spread out exclaves. Isolated groups in particular will struggle most with this, as they are beholden to the environments that they inhabit.

To work through this might require cooperation with larger existing nation-states in some capacity, which will likely be a challenge as FOM challenges their sovereignty on a fundamental level. While this is a core component of the federation, it is likely to be one that cannot be realistically realized in the near-term due to realpolitik constraints.

As this sort of ranges across the enclaves, governance, and cultural modules, I chose to put it all here:

Just copy pasting my original feedback from reddit in case it gets removed for whatever reason and for reference purposes:

Hopping in here after a read through the framework. This is an amazing amount of work for under a year! I really like how you took examples from across history and existing political movements as methods and mechanisms to build your foundation from. It's a lot of foresight and cross disciplinary in nature which is unfortunately quite rare to see in conversations around "what comes next".
Couple things leap at me:
- structurally, this all makes sense and is quite sound. I would encourage some further examination in how systems can interact with one another to produce closed cycles in terms of food production, water consumption, and energy (I wasn't able to download the larger library, none of the links worked unfortunately so I don't know if this was already covered). This would help cement alterations in how humans process environmental information to build out a more synthesis oriented mindset. Your math and formulas are great tools and I really like that you took the time to include caloric estimates!
- The step process to building independent communities is *excellent* and I like that you included defense and options for people in urban zones that won't allow for complete independent living. But I think an area that could be strengthened is how to connect these communities across distances. Really *leaning into* the notion of a parallel society and what that means/looks like in the context of our current reality. Mesh nets? Fediverse? A mix? More?
- I know this is likely western focused, which is entirely understandable, but how can the framework be adapted for other cultures or environmental realities? What about when you have deeply integrated multicultural communities? When truth and transparency runs face first into "my culture practices specific privacy" versus "my culture practices radical transparency", what happens?
- The political structure is logical and well thought out but I'd encourage drawing from the simplest, most common superstructures that humans have created to reduce the possibility of friction and maximize the modularity, to allow for people from different cultural backgrounds to integrate the framework into their respective realities. For example, the enclaves being capped at 1k-1.2k people makes sense from a top down perspective, but would that hold true on the ground? The culture that the framework develops seems to be trying to be independent of existing norms and systems while also tapping into the classical village motif which makes sense - but also runs the risk of ignoring how humans will maximize a niche when resources are abundant. The federation structure is likely meant to handle this, by allowing for a variety of enclaves to be options to migrate to, but given the likely level of dispersion that the federation would have, that might not be a practical resolution? Not sure, I'm still mulling this one over in my head. I feel like you have a really thorough structure for the enclaves core principles so this just may be me being too arm chair sociologist xD
- The expansion of the enclaves once they go past 1.2k people is a little undercooked I think? You'd need to go through the stages of development with a brand new group working together in a new environment if I'm reading this correctly, so you'd need most likely a minimum of 100-200 people. In which case, a population cap of 1.2k-->1.4k (as the break point when you can actually create a new enclave) makes sense.
"Guilds" may be a bit hairy as these necessarily form sub political structures. The tendency for humans to form cliques is something that I don't think can really be avoided, so I'm curious how the framework would cope with a guild or number of guilds collaborating to ensure that their objectives are met in lieu of the other guilds? How would guilds balance each other out? Would they be capped at membership limits like enclaves? What if you have multiple enclaves working in close proximity and growth happens which blends them together due to cooperation across the federation? I see how macroguilds are meant to act as containers of complex knowledge, but not necessarily how this prevents ossification of the political structures these create.
- One of the methods you use is to integrate a lottery system into the role decision matrix, which is good. I would suggest expanding it from 1 person to 3 people who fill the role. This creates balance, where each person must vote within their role to make a decision - so a Resource Coordinator role is in truth 3 people working together. The structure creates a fractal representation of the larger voting mechanisms you're using in the framework so that psychologically people integrate the concepts at all levels more readily.
-
I want to highlight that this is very, very impressive work and that you should be quite proud of the amount of effort you put into this. While I had a few things that led to questions, please keep in mind that this is more or less all I had after reading your full 142 page document! The rigor here is excellent and the idea of using your OS as a framework really helps with people being able to adapt this to their needs. I'd **strongly** encourage you to reach out to anark and other folks in the big leftist spaces and share this or talk to them about it. There's a large need for systems and structures that *actualize* and *operationalize* theory into reality.
Also, the downloads on your website broke, so I haven't been able to download anything besides the pdf document. I'd love to check out the research and resource document to see what you chose to include!
That you apparently did this in a few months raises a rather big eyebrow for me (in a good way!~), as this requires domain knowledge of at least a half-dozen disciplines at a very high level. If you're ever interested in collaborating, please feel free to reach out!
Looks like you added a direct download option to the website, so I'll go ahead and give that a go. Once I've had a chance to look through things, I'll give some more feedback there!
- I think that connecting the enclaves is the next most logical extension of the system that is being built here. It's already a fractal organism by nature, but making that more explicit in the design will help guide people towards intentionality.
Your assumptions are sound imho but only *if* the individuals are willing to put in similar effort as you have. And without buy in - due to either them using it or being intellectually motivated - I don't think they would be willing to refine the system further. This is just my own biased experiences though, so please take that with a Jupiter sized grain of salt
The Tor compromise is logical, though I don't know if you need to really have a registration system as much as you need a diplomatic one. The method in which two communities connect together is always going to start with people simply talking, so perhaps rather than relying on a digital system it relies on a personal one. Not sure. This one needs more brainstorming for sure.
- This makes sense. By having it be locally motivated and governed, it allows people to make what they feel works best for themselves. This way, you can have people opt into whatever mechanisms they prefer while still being participants of the larger whole.
- Dunbar's really does make everything more difficult doesn't it xD I think 1.4k is reasonable, as it allows for "village" with more defined levels of contribution. If these are situated in a fractal (buzzword!) arrangement where each 1.4k group connects to one another to form larger and larger constructs, then it mitigates the challenges of both complexity in production and coordination across scales. As each 1.4k group can self-manage, they can independently operate while still contributing to the collective goals of the larger federation. I don't think its quiiiiite so important to necessarily have to worry about facing the people that you support, as there are psychological considerations in how to manage large groups of humans. But thats a very minor detail that can be safely put into the "eh" bin. Functionally, this all works when taking fractalization and network theory into account.
- As much as I like having the audits, something be mindful of is that the more steps in the system, the more energy it takes in conversion of effort. If it becomes a case where an audit is required for everything, then what is the impact overall on the efficiency (meaning, use of energy) of the community guilds? It is a good system though and I think the blind audits are a good way to deal with the cliques. The other half of this honestly comes down to culture. If the culture can be equally used as a teaching tool to avoid the pitfalls of existing systems, then it coupled with the blind audits may be sufficient.
- TBH I don't think it should ever be less than 3. I think 3 is the minimal viable number because it then establishes a cultural norm. A norm, once built, is difficult to break down which reinforces the stability of the system. This is an area I've dived into pretty extensively, so just lmk if that is something I can help with.
- Naturally! A good mindset to have :3

alright, for my current noodling ive been trying to think of ways to make a solar updraft tower ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_updraft_tower ) more useful by reducing/removing the exterior collector envelope

the big barrier to these things is that they cost a ton of money to setup initially due to the land space demands and collector engineering. once theyre setup though, theyre extremely low maintenance and pretty reliable in respect to energy generation during the day (they dont work without sunlight)

there have been others who have explored options, and one of them that i do have is a solar pond approach, however im going to demo out how a geo updraft tower could work instead by just coping out my notes here so you can seem my process:
Solar updraft tower
The solar updraft tower (SUT) is a design concept for a renewable-energy power plant for generating electricity from low-temperature solar heat. Sunshine heats the air beneath a very wide greenhouse-like roofed collector structure surrounding the central base of a very tall chimney tower. The resulting convection causes a hot air updraft in the ...
Solar updraft tower
solar thermal stores hot water as added heat source in insulated tanks/thermal reservoirs during the day (can also integrate solar ponds)

heat transfer to the air via heat exchanges and piping systems - minimum air temp difference (delta T ΔT) and velocity (~3m/s) needed to sustain airflow and turbine operation in tower

assuming stable geothermal temps of ~25 C and solar thermal ranges of 50-90C depending on radiance:
pass air through heat exchanger and piping system where it absorbs heat from the hot water and the geothermal heat of the earth

efficiency depends on surface area of heat exchangers and pipes. air velocity and flow rate also impact this - too fast reduces transfer, too slow reduces airflow. thermal conductivity of all materials must be considered

you can get 24/7 operations depending on thermal storage. can reach ~10 m/s

core assumptions:

ambient temperature T ambient = 15C = 288K T ambient = 15C = 288K
heated air temperature T heated =40C =313K T heated = 40C = 313K
temperature difference ΔT =25K ΔT = 25K (achievable with geothermal + solar thermal heating)

so the calculation is 100 square root of 2 x 9.81 x 100 x 25/288 = square root of velocity (m/s)
the above would equal 170.8 or ~13 m/s at 100 meters tall

even with a 100 m tower, the theoretical air velocity can reach ~13 m/s, well above the minimum practical velocity (~3 m/s) needed for turbine operation
increasing tower height to 150 m or 200 m further boosts velocity to 16 m/s and 18.5 m/s, respectively, which can improve power output and efficiency
these velocities are theoretical maxima, ignoring friction and turbulence losses, which in practice will reduce velocity by roughly 20–40%, depending on tower design and air path
taller towers (150–200 m) increase velocity and power potential but raise structural and material costs

theoretical maximum | 60-80% theoretical
100: 13.07 (8-10)
150: 16.00 (10-13) [seems ideal mix]
200: 18.48 (11-15)

diameter is 40 | 50 | 60
so:
pie x 20^2 = 1256
pie x 25^2 = 1963
pie x 30^2 = 2827

P air=21×1.2×A×v3=0.6×A×v3
0.6×1256×9.153=0.6×1256×766=577,000 W

aka P air=0.6×A×v3 (W)
P electric=n×P air=0.4×P air

so:
height | inflow | output | total power
100 577,000 230,800 231 kW

Tower Height (m)Estimated Electrical Power Output (kW)
100 = ~230 kW
150 = ~660 kW
200 = ~1,470 kW

rough estimates, so they arent perfect. seems the 150 meter tower is the ideal middle ground at over 500 kw. the conclusion is geothermal + solar thermal heating approach aiming for a 25C temperature difference can support these power levels. that makes the core structure viable i think

we'd need to figure out the lowest possible energy draws in the actual physical structure though

wind turbines at the small scale achieve this all on their own. so i guess the question is how to integrate these things in a useful way..
im pulling from both these concepts while tweaking things

however, for my purposes, im using 50-100 meter deep holes in the earth drilled in sufficient areas (like you would for a geothermal home heating system) to get the thermal heat from the earth mixed with the hot water from the solar thermal system

all in all, the notion seems to theoretically work on paper, but whether that means anything is up in the air. cant exactly go drilling holes in the ground
another thing ive been dabbling with is trying to find ways to solve the energy storage problem. theres a lot of the obvious takes - sand, salt, etc. i wanted something a bit less complex and more efficient in terms of space, so i thought "why not put the water tank inside the home?" im in favor of basically getting rid of SFH in favor of comfortable, well designed complexes. in that sense, the center of the complex becomes hakka-like, where its more of a community space.

anyways, specifically i was thinking that if you used a 10 meter tall tank and then a thermosiphon, you could then couple it with solar thermal heating to warm the water at the top of the tank and cycle the water through a contained system. water comes out the hot end and is used for district heating etc and to spin vortex turbines to reclaim the power at night. during the day, excess solar heat helps move the water back up the tank.

water is an exceptionally good way to store power like this, and merely moving it up and down an elevation produces enormous amounts of power. this systems a bit simpler and doesnt try to scale to something like a hydro dam. instead, it tries to use each individual building to essentially create a dams worth of water across a village/city/whatever. if each building houses a sufficiently sized tank, then in effect, the entire city becomes the gravity battery.

like everything i design, this is based on organic processes - think of it like being the blood pumping through the body. in this case, the water cycle is the literal energy stream powering the city and all the things within it. this directly ties people to it, creating a symbiotic relationship, which i hope will psychologically result in a fostering of more engagement->empathy->collective concern.

this isnt just fantasy either (even though i prefer a certain aesthetic~), its real: https://www.reddit.com/r/solarpunk/comme...?context=1

and it works! by utilizing closed energy systems as much as possible, you can transform not just how a city functions but how *people* relate within a complex meta-system.

another thing ive been dabbling with is trying to find ways to solve the energy storage problem. theres a lot of the obvious takes - sand, salt, etc. i wanted something a bit less complex and more efficient in terms of space, so i thought "why not put the water tank inside the home?" im in favor of basically getting rid of SFH in favor of comfortable, well designed complexes. in that sense, the center of the complex becomes hakka-like, where its more of a community space.

anyways, specifically i was thinking that if you used a 10 meter tall tank and then a thermosiphon, you could then couple it with solar thermal heating to warm the water at the top of the tank and cycle the water through a contained system. water comes out the hot end and is used for district heating etc and to spin vortex turbines to reclaim the power at night. during the day, excess solar heat helps move the water back up the tank.

water is an exceptionally good way to store power like this, and merely moving it up and down an elevation produces enormous amounts of power. this systems a bit simpler and doesnt try to scale to something like a hydro dam. instead, it tries to use each individual building to essentially create a dams worth of water across a village/city/whatever. if each building houses a sufficiently sized tank, then in effect, the entire city becomes the gravity battery.

like everything i design, this is based on organic processes - think of it like being the blood pumping through the body. in this case, the water cycle is the literal energy stream powering the city and all the things within it. this directly ties people to it, creating a symbiotic relationship, which i hope will psychologically result in a fostering of more engagement->empathy->collective concern.

this isnt just fantasy either (even though i prefer a certain aesthetic~), its real: https://www.reddit.com/r/solarpunk/comme...?context=1

and it works! by utilizing closed energy systems as much as possible, you can transform not just how a city functions but how *people* relate within a complex meta-system.

i suppose im what you could call a jack of all trades kind of person - ive done a little bit of everything. im in the US but have lived in many places here. ive done education, social work, construction, analysis, ghost writing, game design, and a few other things im forgetting about atm. for most of my life, ive been a ravenous consumer of knowledge - i read atlas shrugged and the silmarillion at 14 and concluded ayn rand was full of shiiiiiiit. after that realization, and understanding that a lot of our culture is built upon the (silly) principles within, i strived to understand the "why" behind everything. ive studied dozens of fields from astronomy to biology to engineering and urban design to energy. ive tried to find pathways that could lead us out of this cataclysm that is fast approaching and in turned tried to teach people how to use these systems to do so.

i dont specialize though, i generalize across a web of interests and try to deepen the whole web as best as i can. its this tendency of mine that led to an early realization in my youth about the state of the planets biosphere and how its fate is directly tied to that of the existing power superstructure. if the superstructure continues to exist, then it will - like a cancer - consume literally everything until it too dies. in that realization, came what i think one could call a patient obsession.

i also realized that in effect, we're nothing more than slaves to zombie systems. i detest this notion, and above all desire freedom especially in the face of these existential dangers that no one is going to seriously address

ive been working on my own more philosophical structured system for well close to 17 years now i think. ive studied arcologies, western and eastern and indigenous religions and philosophies, esoteric work by weirdos and oddballs, and tried to synthesize it into a series of core systems. i think relying overly much on invoking past names is a pathway to futility and circular debates. ive been in leftists spaces of many flavors and gave up on them all for the same reason - they just debate. they dont build anything. its just theory theory theory. but theory must be tied to praxis or its useless.

there has been a terrible awareness of how little time we actually have left for many years now. its like watching a doomsday clock and no one else cares that its so close to midnight. its maddening. even people who, hypothetically, should be all in on trying to build anything to survive just brush it off and stick with comfort. and the ones who have built their little communes are remarkably insular. there is so, so little time left before things become locked down, utterly dystopian, and firmly fixed on a global pathway to self destruction.

i do not believe any 'expert' or 'hero' or 'leader' can or will save us.

i tend towards building frameworks since they seem to cause less autonomic pushback compared to a "political" strategy. people are coded to reject certain types of phrases and words by the enormously complex propaganda machine that has been erected. so, best way around that is to use alternative phrases, concepts, or systems that the existing propaganda isnt adjusted for. course, thats getting way harder with LLMs everywhere.

but, i will suggest something: people are annoyingly messy, frail, imperfect, and frustrating. you can put the simplest, easiest system in front of them and theyll reject it because they are comfortable, used to convenience, or afraid of change. mind you, this is mainly US folks ive had the friction with, cant speak towards the rest of the planet. but the number of people who actually seem interested in doing something probably could fill a small bucket of water next to the ocean of indifference.

one should plant the seeds of a tree who's shade i'll never know. but i also know the history of this world. i know how old we are as a species, i know the struggles of it, the legacies long forgotten or ignored. i know how precious life itself is in the universe and i cant just sit here and watch it all die. i cant. so i wont. so i dont.
