Yes I saw this! It's super interesting! I saw an example where they were using straw in Africa to create similar checkerboard patterns to stop the soils from dying. If you combined the techniques, it might lead to better results..

Actually, hm, thinking on it, I wonder if you combined the chinese method with the african method and also integrated phytomining plants to help clear out pollutants from the soil/sand could regenerate areas of the Earth damaged by human activity.
